Pre-Employment (Placement) Medicals – COHN, RN
POHS Pre-Placement Medicals are conducted to assist employers in finding the appropriate job fit for employees. Components of the pre-assignment exam are based on the companies’ job requirements. The recommendation for an applicant’s medical suitability is based on the results of the exam in relation to the requirements of the job. All Medical Assessment services provided by Precede Occupational Health and Safety Services are completed using only RN’s at minimum to ensure quality of service and constancy. Precede does not engage LPN’s to complete any of their services.

RETURN TO WORK ASSESSMENTS
Within Precede OHS, our RN’s and Physicians work closely with the employee as well as the employer, in a collaborative effort, to measure the employees capabilities in returning to work after a physical condition. The employer is then provided a detailed performance metric that assists the employee and employer in a timely, cost efficient, safe manner when returning to work.
AUDIOMETRIC TESTING
Audiometric Testing is becoming a key component to most industry safety standards. As stated in Part 16 of the Alberta Occupational Health & Safety Code, all employers are required to protect their workers, when it is deemed that noise is a safety hazard in the workplace. Noise exposure of over 85dB for an 8 hour period falls into this category. Regular Audiometric testing is standard. This means that Baseline Audiometric Testing must be done within the first 6 months of any employee starting employment with an employer. Additional tests are then required 12 months after the baseline test and every two years thereafter. POHS offers audiometric testing by certified audiometric technicians and occupational health nurses in accordance with Government Noise Regulations. All abnormal audiograms are reviewed by the company audiologist.
Components:
QUALITATIVE FIT TESTING
When completing the Qualitative Fit Testing with our professionals, we are ensuring that not only the safety mask is fitting to the employees shape of their face/head, but that the mask is being correctly used by the employee. In this procedure using a pass/fail method, the employee is required to detect Irritant smoke. If this employee cannot detect these harmful odors, the test is considered a pass.
QUANTITATIVE FIT TESTING
When completing the Quantitative Fit Testing with our professionals, we are ensuring that not only the safety mask is fitting to the employees shape of their face/head, but using a numerical measurement of the ‘fit factor’ of a particular respirator. We use a particle counting device (such as a TSI Portacount Plus) that measures the concentration of microscopic particles that exist in the atmosphere to measure the ‘fit factor’ directly. The calculation is made while the person performs dynamic movements and/or breathing exercises resembling those experienced in the workplace in order to stress the respirator seal.
PULMONARY LUNG FUNCTION TESTING
Spirometry or Pulmonary Function Tests (PFTs) is measuring how well the lung draws in and releases air. When exposed to contaminants in the workplace, your employee’s lungs are affected impacting the health of their lungs. When left unchecked, this exposure can cause irreversible damage to the health of lungs. Spirometry can be utilized when implementing the Health Surveillance of your employees who wear respiratory protective equipment which is mandatory as per the Government of Alberta and consistent with the Alberta Occupational Health and Safety code. Let our Certified Spirometry Technicians help keep your employee’s lungs healthy.
